Type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a disease marked by high levels of sugar in the blood due to predominant insulin resistance with relative insulin deficiency or predominant secretory defect with insulin resistance.

Insulin is a hormone needed to move glucose (blood sugar) into cells and sugar is the basic fuel for the cells in the body. In type 2 diabetes, glucose builds up in the blood instead of being used for energy (called hyperglycemia).

Type 2 diabetes Type 2 diabetesoccurs in people of all ages and races and is more common in African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, and Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders, as well as the aged and overweight population.

Recent studies have show that high blood pressure is a serious problem for many diabetes sufferers. A new study at The U of T indicated that when Type-2 diabetes patients ate up to four teaspoons of Salba or Chia seed a day there was a major reduction in high blood pressure readings.

Type 2 diabetes is usually diagnosed by Fasting plasma glucose (FPG) test or Casual plasma glucose test.

Type 2 diabetes is a progressive and life-long condition. It may be more difficult to keep the blood glucose levels in the target range over time.

Over the years, high blood glucose damages nerves and blood vessels, leading to complications such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease, nerve problems, gum infections, erectile dysfunction and amputation. It is fortunate that proper care and management of glycemia, Type 2 diabeteshypertension and dyslipidemia with the help of healthcare team can prevent or delay the onset of these complications.

Structured lifestyle modification interventions (moderate weight loss and regular physical activity) and drugs like metformin and acarbose have been shown to prevent the progression of type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes is a psychologically and behavioral demanding disease. Patients with type 2 diabetes should take steps to manage their diabetes to help maintain their overall health and wellness.
