Diabetes Prevention

Diabetes is a serious medical condition that can be prevented. Diabetes prevention can be achieved by making changes in the diet and increasing the level of physical activity.

Diabetes PreventionMany health conditions, including being overweight, unhealthy cholesterol, smoking, high blood glucose, high blood pressure, and physical inactivity, increase the risk of diabetes. Being overweight (especially if the weight is concentrated around the mid-section) is a significant risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes. Diabetes prevention can be done by being alert of these conditions and keeping them in control with proper nutrition and regular physical activity like aerobic exercise, strength training, and flexibility exercises.

Also, for diabetes prevention, Ginseng is one of the most popular herbal remedies and has been used in China for thousands of years.   American ginseng in particular helps regulate the digestion and protects the liver and helps control blood glucose levels.

National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) launched a public awareness campaign stressing diabetes prevention, called “It’s Diabetes PreventionNot Too Late to Prevent Diabetes. Take Your First Step Today” at the Yates Family YMCA in Jacksonville, Florida. The diabetes prevention campaign delivers the message that type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed by losing a small amount of weight, by following a low-fat, low-calorie meal plan, and getting 30 minutes of physical activity five times per week.

Diabetes prevention is proven, possible and powerful. We should encourage people to take this message of good health to their families and their communities, so we can put an end to the diabetes epidemic. For diabetes prevention, everything counts, including taking the stairs, walking the dog, dancing to music, and mowing the lawn. Physical activity just needs to occur every day. Make diabetes prevention fun and take it step by step.
